Santiago, Chile: The debate surrounding the relevance of academia transcends disciplines, infiltrating even the realm of AI research. IDG's Georgios Yannakakis, alongside Julian Togelius, penned an opinion paper titled 'Choose Your Weapon: Survival Strategies for Depressed AI Academics.' Earlier this year, Georgios presented this research at Congreso Futuro, a knowledge dissemination event in Latin America.
In his concise 15-minute talk, the IEEE Transactions on Games editor-in-chief illuminated current AI advancements and the anxiety researchers face in keeping pace. The timing is crucial, given the private sector's substantial investment in cutting-edge AI research, creating challenges for AI researchers to stay at the forefront.
The paper and the talk aim to initiate a dialogue among academics regarding this often-overlooked subject and devise strategies to enhance the research landscape in AI. Georgios expressed, "The ideas we share now have been in the air for years, but they have finally materialized in a paper of which we are both quite proud. The paper serves not only as therapeutic reading but, significantly, as a survival guidebook for junior AI researchers and academics. We hope you find as much enjoyment in it as we did writing about this topic."
